When it comes to PR there is always room for learning and improvement. If you have been in this industry for quite some time you’ll know that the constant shift in technologies, communication and perception leads to changing your tactics accordingly.

Being a Publicist myself to Athletes and working in the Sports industry, I have come to realize that this field of work is under a constant evaluation and breaking from bad PR habits is something you need to work on along the way.

Below you’ll find my top ten tips towards being a better Publicist and establishing good PR!

1) The worst possible answer to the media and press is “no comment”. Avoid it at all times!

2) Before approaching a journalist for coverage or an interview for your client, research their beats, recent articles they’ve written and study their media receptiveness.

3) Remember PR is also about tangible results. Do no attempt anything that you cannot measure.

4) The Barcelona Principles should be your bedtime prayer and your favorite song.

5) If your company claims to be ‘green’; prove it.

6) Remember the number of Facebook likes do not commensurate with how wonderful your company is.

7) When in crisis an apology is not a sign of weakness.

8) Your writers have to be good under any and all circumstances.

9) It the client-company relationship isn’t working out, a breakup is the best possible move.

10) This position as “last line of defense” is what distinguishes the adequate publicist from the extraordinary one. Your company relies on you to turn a scandal into an opportunity, do not falter, you are not a flake, make it happen!

Remember what they say, “Talk to my Publicist”, so go out and just do your thing.
